Marchand consacrant l'essentiel de son temps à l'étude, il vivait à Sherwenty, en Lituanie, vers la fin du XVIIIe siècle ; son petit-fils, le rabbin de Kamienetz, rapportait que sa dévotion à l'étude du Talmud était telle que pendant vingt ans il ne se déshabilla pas pour dormir. Il rédigea une méthodologie de la Mishnah et des introductions aux ordres Ḳodashim et Ṭeharot sous le titre « Zikron Yehudah », dont seules certaines parties ont été publiées, à Wilna en 1851 et 1860.
