Médecin et privat-docent à l'université de Vienne, né à Nedraschitz (Bohême) en 1837, mort à Vienne le 31 décembre 1894 ; après ses études à Prague et à Vienne, il s'établit au Caire, où il dirigea l'hôpital européen, puis à Alexandrie comme délégué du gouvernement autrichien à la Commission sanitaire internationale. Revenu en Europe en 1870, il exerça à Carlsbad et poursuivit ses recherches à Vienne, où il fut nommé privat-docent en 1884 ; ses nombreux travaux portent principalement sur le diabète.
