Scolastique, philosophe et théologien français, né en 1079 dans un village près de Nantes et mort en 1142 au prieuré de Saint-Marcel près de Châlons-sur-Saône ; sa liaison avec Héloïse, nièce du chanoine Fulbert, qu'il épousa secrètement, lui valut d'être émasculé par les parents de celle-ci, et il passa le reste de sa vie dans des monastères. Son « Colloque entre un philosophe, un juif et un chrétien » se veut une apologie du christianisme, où le représentant du judaïsme défend l'Ancien Testament contre l'accusation de matérialisme ; Abélard y désapprouve nettement les mesures qui restreignaient l'activité des juifs au commerce et au prêt d'argent.
