Second fils d'Adam et Ève et jeune frère de Caïn, il fut le premier berger tandis que Caïn cultivait la terre. Dieu préféra son offrande, les premiers-nés de son troupeau, à celle de Caïn, qui lui offrit des fruits de la terre ; par jalousie, Caïn le tua. La littérature hellénistique et rabbinique en fait la première victime innocente du mal et le premier martyr, désigné comme « le Juste ».
