Il est resté connu pour son altercation avec R. Ismaël ben Yosé à l'entrée du collège rabbinique, à la suite de laquelle Rabbi lui ordonna de rester à la porte ; la légende ajoute qu'il fut châtié pour son arrogance par une maladie de peau et la noyade de deux de ses fils.
