Chef de la tribu arabe des Banu al-Khazraj à Médine et adversaire influent de Mahomet, à la tête du parti que celui-ci appelait « Hanifa ». Allié des Banu Ḳainuḳa'a, il empêcha leur massacre après leur reddition et encouragea les Banu al-Nadhir à résister, sans leur venir en aide ; lors de l'expédition contre la Syrie en 630, il forma avec ses alliés juifs un camp séparé qui ne rejoignit pas l'armée, et sa disparition entraîna l'expulsion définitive des Juifs demeurés à Médine.
