Juif de la tribu des Banu Ḳainuḳa'a, à Médine, converti à l'islam deux ans avant la mort de Mahomet, mort en 663 ; nommé d'abord Al-Husain, il se disait descendant de Joseph et prit à sa conversion le nom d'Abdallah ibn Salam. Prototype des convertis juifs à l'islam, auquel les recueils de tradition musulmane consacrent des chapitres particuliers, il fournit à Mahomet des informations d'origine juive et peut être compté parmi les pères du Hadith ; on lui attribue un petit catéchisme pseudonyme, les « Questions d'Abdallah ibn Salam ».
