Juif du Yémen du VIIe siècle, installé à Médine, où il embrassa l'islam avant d'être banni pour avoir critiqué l'administration du calife Othman. En Égypte, il fonda une secte hostile à Othman pour défendre les prétentions d'Ali au califat ; la tradition rapporte qu'il rendit à Ali des honneurs divins, ce qui lui valut d'être exilé à Madain, et qu'après l'assassinat d'Ali il enseigna que celui-ci n'était pas mort et reviendrait emplir la terre de justice.
