Né à Lunel, d'où son surnom de Yarḥi, et descendant de Meshullam ben Jacob de Lunel, il s'installa à Montpellier où il prit la tête de l'opposition au rationalisme des maïmonidiens lors de la controverse de 1303-1306. Ses lettres à Salomon ben Adret de Barcelone, publiées sous le titre « Minḥat Ḳenaot », appelaient à frapper d'anathème l'étude de la philosophie et l'interprétation allégorique de la Bible.
