Chirurgien cité dans le Talmud (Ta'anit 21b) comme exemple de piété et de bienfaisance juives : vivant de son travail, il n'acceptait jamais de paiement direct de ses patients, mais avait fixé à sa maison une boîte où chacun déposait ce qu'il voulait. Le Talmud raconte aussi que deux jeunes disciples éprouvèrent sa confiance en lui revendant les matelas sur lesquels ils avaient dormi, et qu'il recevait chaque jour des salutations du ciel, alors qu'Abaye, 280-339, n'en était jugé digne qu'une fois par semaine.
