Philanthrope établi à Antioche dans la première partie du deuxième siècle. Il est rapporté qu'il vendit la moitié de ses biens, déjà réduits par ses aumônes, pour ne pas renvoyer les mains vides les rabbins Eliézer, Josué et Akiba, venus recueillir des dons destinés à l'enseignement, et qu'il découvrit peu après un trésor ; son nom semble avoir servi durant des siècles en Palestine à désigner tout homme d'une bienfaisance exceptionnelle.
