Nom porté notamment par un frère de Rabban Gamaliel — probablement Gamaliel II —, dont la polygamie constitue le seul cas connu parmi les autorités de l'époque talmudique et dont la veuve épousa Gamaliel selon la loi du lévirat, et par un amora palestinien né en Babylonie, actif aux IIIe et IVe siècles, élève de Huna et de Judah, désigné dans les écoles babyloniennes comme « notre maître au pays d'Israël ». Ce dernier, réputé halakhiste et fortuné, pratiquait la charité en secret et choisissait surtout des versets des Psaumes comme textes de ses homélies.
