Célèbre amora babylonien surnommé Rab, Abba Arika fonda l'académie de Sura et mourut en 247. Ordonné par Juda Ier, il regagna la Babylonie où son arrivée marque, dans la chronologie talmudique, la 530e année du calendrier séleucide et la 219e de l'ère commune ; il y enseigna d'abord à Neardea avant de s'installer à Sura, qui devint sous sa direction le grand centre intellectuel du judaïsme babylonien.
