Sephardic Jewish family. Shimon Lavi (c. 1486-1585), expelled from Spain and settled in Tripoli after a stay in Fez, is the author of the famous piyut Bar Yochai sung throughout the Sephardic and Eastern world. He is regarded as the restorer of Jewish religious life in Tripoli in the 16th century.
