History
Selon Joseph Toledano, Beriro fut d'abord le surnom d'une des branches de la famille Benchimol de Tanger, devenu patronyme avec le temps. Deux origines sont proposées : portugaise (la clameur, l'homme bruyant) ou espagnole (indicatif d'une localité) ; une tradition familiale fait remonter la lignée au chevalier Gaspard de Beriro, qui se serait converti au judaïsme au XIIe-XIIIe siècle pour épouser une juive nommée Esther. Le nom est porté au Maroc (Tanger, Tétouan, Fès, Casablanca) et au Sahara algérien, puis, au XIXe siècle, à Gibraltar et en Angleterre. Rabbi Shelomo Beriro, d'origine espagnole, installé à Tamentit au Touat après 1391, mort de soif dans le désert avec son fils Itshak, devint en 1905 le saint patron de Colomb-Béchar. Simon Benchimol-Beriro (1868-1950) fut un notable communautaire de Fès, établi à Casablanca en 1910.
