Absent de la liste Tolédano des noms usuels au Maroc au XVIe siècle, le nom est d'adoption tardive. Abraham Bensaude (1790-1868), grand commerçant de Rabat, fonda à Ponta Delgada, aux Açores, la première communauté juive portugaise depuis 1497, ainsi que la maison Bensaude et Compagnie. Sa descendance s'illustra au Portugal : Alfredo (1856-1941), fondateur en 1911 de l'Institut supérieur de technologie, Raoul, grand rabbin de Lisbonne et médecin royal, ou encore l'historien Joaquim (1859-1952).
