Patronyme d'origine hébraïque : selon Joseph Toledano, il fut porté par une famille de prêtres établie à Jérusalem après le retour des exilés de Babylone, au VIe siècle avant l'ère chrétienne. Le nom est attesté en Espagne au XVe siècle, puis au Maroc au XVIe siècle, où il fut porté par une famille de Mégourachim, les expulsés d'Espagne installés à Fès. Sa figure la plus notable est rabbi Itshak Bebay, célèbre rabbin de Fès, descendant de cette famille de Mégourachim, mort vers 1617. Au XXe siècle, le nom avait disparu au Maghreb : il compte ainsi parmi les patronymes anciens dont l'itinéraire, de Jérusalem à l'Espagne puis à Fès, n'est plus connu que par la documentation historique.
