Le prêtre Mattityahou de Modiïn déclencha en -167 la révolte contre les décrets d'Antiochos IV Épiphane. Son fils Yehouda ha-Maccabi mena la reconquête et purifia le Temple (à l'origine de Hanoukka, -164) ; son frère Chimon rendit la Judée quasi indépendante et fonda en -142 la dynastie hasmonéenne, seule dynastie juive souveraine jusqu'à -37.
