À l'Université hébraïque de Jérusalem se constitua une école d'historiens, dont Yitzhak Baer et Ben-Zion Dinur, qui réécrivirent l'histoire juive dans une perspective nationale et sioniste. Ils insistèrent sur la continuité du lien à la Terre d'Israël et l'unité du peuple à travers l'exil. Gershom Scholem y refonda en parallèle l'étude académique de la Kabbale.
