Né au Caire, professeur d'informatique à l'université Bar-Ilan, où il dirigea l'institut de recherche documentaire et de linguistique computationnelle. Rôle de premier plan dans le Projet Responsa (Bar-Ilan), l'un des tout premiers systèmes plein-texte au monde (Prix Israël 2007), et dans le Projet Friedberg de la Guenizah. Décrit comme « scion d'une famille de rabbins et de savants ».
