Juriste avant-guerre en Allemagne, émigré aux États-Unis en 1935 ; rabbin réformé, longtemps rabbin du Holy Blossom Temple de Toronto (senior scholar à partir de 1978). Auteur d'une vingtaine d'ouvrages de théologie, philosophie et histoire ; son œuvre la plus connue est The Torah: A Modern Commentary (1981), premier commentaire complet non orthodoxe de la Torah en anglais pour usage congrégationnel en Amérique du Nord.
