Mathématicien allemand issu d'une famille juive de mathématiciens, connu pour ses travaux en analyse fonctionnelle (matrices de Toeplitz, théorème de Hellinger-Toeplitz). Démis de ses fonctions en 1935 sous les lois nazies, il émigra en Palestine mandataire en 1939 où il fut conseiller scientifique de l'Université hébraïque de Jérusalem jusqu'à sa mort.
