Entré en 1877 comme apprenti à la librairie ancienne Joseph Baer & Co. de Francfort, il en devient gérant (1890) puis copropriétaire (1901). Spécialiste d'histoire du livre, de bibliophilie et de bibliographie, il publie plusieurs études savantes. Juif, frappé d'interdiction professionnelle en 1934, contraint de porter l'étoile jaune, il meurt à Francfort en 1944 des suites d'un bombardement.
