Né Marcel Bloch à Paris de parents juifs, il fonde avant-guerre la Société des Avions Marcel Bloch. Arrêté par Vichy puis déporté à Buchenwald comme otage politique, il refuse de diriger une usine d'avions pour l'occupant. Après la Libération, il rebaptise son entreprise Avions Marcel Dassault (du nom de code de son frère Paul dans la Résistance) et développe le Mirage, le Falcon et plus tard le Rafale.
