Philosophe et anthropologue parisien, théoricien controversé de la « mentalité primitive ». Ami de Jean Jaurès (il contribua au financement de L'Humanité) et allié par mariage d'Alfred Dreyfus, qu'il soutint publiquement parmi les premiers. Cofondateur de l'Institut d'ethnologie de Paris (1925).
