Né à Zülz en Silésie prussienne dans une famille juive, docteur de l'université de Berlin. Il accompagne Sir Moses Montefiore dans ses missions au Proche-Orient et en Europe (1839–1874). Directeur du Judith Theological College de Ramsgate (1868–1888) et premier principal du Jews' College (1856). Exécuteur testamentaire de Montefiore.
