Né à Łódź (Pologne) dans une famille juive émigrée en Angleterre. Docteur en mathématiques de Cambridge, il travailla pour le National Coal Board puis devint resident fellow du Salk Institute (San Diego) en 1963. Il conçut et présenta la série documentaire de la BBC The Ascent of Man (1973) et le livre homonyme, l'un des grands ouvrages de vulgarisation scientifique du XXe siècle.
