Ancien converso, professeur de métaphysique à Salamanque puis de médecine à Toulouse, il fut emprisonné et torturé par l'Inquisition avant de gagner Amsterdam vers 1662 et d'y professer ouvertement le judaïsme. Il devint le principal apologiste séfarade contre le christianisme et contre la critique spinoziste de la religion ; ses écrits polémiques circulèrent surtout en manuscrit dans les communautés juives d'Europe.
