Chef marchand juif de la Compagnie néerlandaise des Indes orientales (VOC) à Cochin pendant près de cinquante ans, il mena une politique culturelle d'achat de livres hébreux en Hollande pour sa communauté. Il déchiffra d'anciennes plaques de cuivre de Cochin et devint l'historien de sa communauté ; sa lettre de 1768 au banquier Tobias Boas reste une source majeure sur les juifs de Cochin. Il rédigea aussi une traduction hébraïque polémique de l'Évangile.
