Né Gaston Ghrenassia (Ghenassia) à Constantine dans une famille juive séfarade d'Algérie de musiciens de malouf ; son père Sylvain Ghrenassia (1914-2004) était violoniste. Contraint de quitter l'Algérie en 1961, il s'installe en France et devient l'un des chanteurs français les plus populaires, revendiquant ouvertement son judaïsme et son attachement à Israël.
