Mathématicien américain d'origine juive ashkénaze, professeur à l'université Columbia. Il a résolu le problème du nombre de classes de Gauss pour les corps quadratiques imaginaires (prix Cole de théorie des nombres, 1987) et cofondé la cryptographie par groupes de tresses.
