Né à Sfax en 1919 dans une famille de commerçants juifs, bachelier au lycée Lyautey de Casablanca, diplômé de Saint-Cyr (1939-1940). Exclu de l'armée en 1941 par le statut des Juifs de Vichy, il reprend du service à la Libération. Capitaine pendant la guerre d'Algérie, il théorise la contre-insurrection dans deux ouvrages devenus classiques.
