Issu d'une famille de rabbins de Salonique venue d'Espagne via Florence au début du XVIIe siècle, il devient journaliste et l'un des fondateurs du sionisme salonicien, premier délégué juif de Grèce au Congrès sioniste mondial (11e Congrès, Vienne, 1913). Émigré en Palestine en 1933 ; le quartier Florentin de Tel-Aviv porte son nom.
