Né à Cologne dans une famille juive, docteur de Leipzig (1897), il rejoint sur suggestion de Franz Boas l'American Museum of Natural History (1898) puis le Field Museum de Chicago. Il mena plusieurs expéditions en Chine et forma l'une des premières grandes collections de culture matérielle chinoise aux États-Unis. Il publia plus de 200 travaux (ethnologie, langues, archéologie), dont sa monographie sur le jade.
