Les Juifs de Montréal

Montreal long housed Canada's largest Jewish community, formed mainly by the massive immigration of Ashkenazi Jews from Eastern Europe from the late nineteenth century, to which were later added Holocaust survivors and, in the second half of the twentieth century, Francophone Jews from North Africa. Concentrated notably around boulevard Saint-Laurent, the community was a major center of North American Yiddish culture, with its press, theater, schools and institutions, as well as an active Zionist and workers' movement. Active in garment-making, commerce and the professions, it developed a dense network of community, educational and social organizations. The dual English and Francophone component, the latter strengthened by Sefardi immigration, makes it a singular community in Canada.
