Fondé en 2004 par un comité international de généalogistes éminents et enregistré comme association israélienne, l'IIJG a ouvert ses portes à la Bibliothèque nationale d'Israël en janvier 2006. Il vise à établir la généalogie juive comme discipline académique, en finançant et coordonnant des projets de recherche savante et en abritant le Paul Jacobi Center.
