Joseph Salomon Delmedigo (1591-1655), dit Yashar de Candie, fut médecin, mathématicien et astronome formé à Padoue, où il étudia auprès de Galilée. Il fut l'un des premiers savants juifs à défendre l'héliocentrisme et l'usage du télescope. Voyageur infatigable, il diffusa la science nouvelle de l'Égypte à la Lituanie ; son Sefer Elim traite de mathématiques et d'astronomie.
