Heinrich Graetz (1817-1891) rédigea la première grande synthèse de l'histoire juive, la Geschichte der Juden en onze volumes (1853-1875). Il y présenta l'histoire du peuple juif comme un récit continu mêlant souffrance et création intellectuelle. Bien que parfois critiqué pour ses partis pris, son œuvre marqua durablement l'historiographie et la conscience nationale juives.
