Winchester, former capital of the kingdom of England, housed a well-documented medieval Jewish community from the Norman conquest onward (11th century). The Jews of Winchester, mentioned in the royal Pipe Rolls, were at the heart of financial and religious tensions in the Plantagenet kingdom before the general expulsion of 1290.
