Capitale du comitat de Vas (Hongrie occidentale), Szombathely vit s'installer une communauté juive au XVIIIe siècle. Sa grande synagogue néologique construite en 1880 fut l'un des édifices religieux juifs les plus importants de Transdanubie ; la communauté fut décimée pendant la Shoah.
