Né à Chiaravalle le 11 novembre 1918, mort à Rome le 5 août 2010. D'origine juive, il dut interrompre ses études à Bologne en 1938 à cause des lois raciales fascistes et ne put obtenir sa licence de lettres qu'après la guerre (thèse d'ethnologie sous R. Pettazzoni). Professeur d'ethnologie à Bari (1968) puis à Rome (1972–1994), figure majeure de l'anthropologie religieuse italienne.
