Philosophe berlinois, père de la Haskalah (Lumières juives). Son Jérusalem (1783) défend la liberté de conscience et la séparation de l'Église et de l'État. Sa traduction de la Torah en allemand (en caractères hébraïques) ouvrit les Juifs à la culture européenne. Surnommé le « Socrate de Berlin ».
