Né à Nancy dans une famille juive lorraine, ancien du Conseil d'État et dreyfusard. Pionnier du vers libre en France et théoricien de la poétique. Il publie en 1908 « Poèmes juifs », première grande voix juive assumée de la poésie française, et participe en 1919 à la Conférence de la paix comme délégué juif.
