In 1516, the Republic of Venice confined its Jews to the Ghetto Nuovo, giving its name to all future Jewish enclosures. There dwelt side by side the nations Tedesca, Levantina, and Ponentina, each with its synagogue (scuola). A major center of Hebrew printing (Bomberg, Bragadin), Venice also witnessed the flourishing of the learning of Leon de Modena and Sara Copia Sullam.
