The Jews of Kaifeng and Imperial China

Probably arriving via the Silk Road under the Song dynasty, the Jews of Kaifeng built a synagogue in 1163 and formed a learned community integrated into Chinese society. Designated by their neighbors as "the sect that removes sinews," they preserved Torah scrolls and commemorative stelae. Assimilation and isolation led to their decline from the nineteenth century onward.
