Israël ben Eliezer (c. 1700–1760), called the Baal Shem Tov ("Master of the Good Name"), is considered the founder of Hasidism. His teaching emphasizes joy, fervent prayer, the service of God in all acts, and divine presence in all things. Spread by his disciples, his ideas profoundly renewed the popular spirituality of Eastern European Jewry.
