Surat, first port of the Mughal empire in Gujarat, welcomed Baghdadi Jewish merchants (Iraqi) and members of the Bene Israel community in the eighteenth century, who founded a Baghdadi synagogue there. The city was a hub of commerce between India, Persia and Arabia.
