Principal city of Vojvodina, Subotica (Szabadka in Hungarian) hosted a flourishing Jewish community in the eighteenth–twentieth centuries, bringing together Sephardim and Ashkenazim. The great Art Nouveau synagogue built in 1902 by architects Komor and Jakab, one of the most remarkable in Europe, testifies to the prosperity of this community.
