Stryi (Stryj in Polish), an economic center of Galicia's oil region, housed an active Jewish community from the sixteenth century onward. In the early twentieth century, Jews comprised about one-third of the population and participated in the oil and timber trade. The Shoah swept away nearly the entire community, deported to Bełżec.
