City in northern Bulgaria, Pleven harbored a Sephardic Jewish community documented from the Ottoman period. It was active in the trade of textiles and food; virtually all Bulgarian Jews survived the Shoah thanks to the refusal of Bulgarian authorities to hand them over to the Nazis.
